Outline

This workshop is called Naked Film-Making! Not naked in the sense of no clothes, but naked in the sense of revealing everything you need to know to make your own drama short films – all in just one day!

This is a one-day practical film-making boot-camp for anyone aged over 16 that serves as a vibrant exciting INTRODUCTION TO FILM-MAKING. It’s a fun, friendly, action-packed hands-on film-making adventure where film industry professionals teach practical skills using professional video equipment. Held in a working film studio in central Brighton. So students get to experience what it’s like making films professionally!

Workshop Content

In the morning, all students will receive hands-on practical training by award-winning film industry professionals covering:

- scripting, planning a shoot, storyboards, setting up and operating professional camera and sound equipment,  shooting shots, directing on set and directing actors.

Involving all members of the group, we will also workshop and develop an idea for a short film from scratch up to the point it is fully developed and scripted – this is the film we will shoot in the afternoon!

After the morning spent training, in the afternoon all students will be allocated a key role in the film shoot: director, assistant director, camera operator, camera assistant, lighting assistant, art director, sound recordist and actors.

The film will then be edited by a professional editor in front of the group to demonstrate the principles of editing. Then the finished film will be screened to the whole group at the end of the day.

Everything used on this workshop is professional equipment: video camera, lights and sound. And editing will be done on a professional edit system: Final Cut Pro. But all the techniques and skills learned in this workshop can be applied to the students own video camera and editing systems at home.  The idea is to give all students the skills, experience and confidence to take their film-making to the next level – to make professional looking films. Once you know what to do, then the sky’s the limit!

All equipment provided. No previous experience necessary – just an interest in making films!

This is an intensive drama “Film School in a day” – so hold onto your hats and join us for a fun, friendly film-making adventure!

After the workshop, the finished film will be uploaded to youtube – which will be available to be viewed on a private link sent out to all participants. The film will be made public if desired by the whole group!

Objectives

To provide practical training by award-winning film industry professionals on:

- scriptwriting, planning a shoot, storyboarding, directing, setting up and operating professional equipment,  shooting shots, directing on set and editing principles.

To equip all students with the technical skills needed which can be used on all future projects made by the students. Technical skills include: camera, lighting, sound – so what they shoot looks and sounds great. Plus basic edit principles so what they shoot can be edited together.

To equip all students with the creative skills needed for all future projects so they know the best way to tell a story. Creative skills include coming up with ideas, screenwriting, directing and the creative side of editing.

To provide all students with a working knowledge of the whole process from script to shoot to edit to finished film. Plus to provide knowledge of what the key film crew roles are and what film people do on/off set to make sure the whole process runs smoothly.

To provide students with a knowledge of the grammar of film – with different shot sizes, what they mean and when they should be used (wide, medium, close, close-up, reverse angles, over-the shoulder, cut-aways, tracking, panning, tilting etc)

To provide an understanding of film-time – of working to tight schedules and deadlines so that they understand how long films take to plan, shoot and edit.

To provide all students with the confidence and inspiration to go out and make their own films!

Structure

Brighton Film Workshops is all about teaching through doing. We teach the skills of film-making by making everything we do as practical as possible. We use practical exercises to demonstrate ideas and we actively encourage students to participate fully in all areas of the workshop. From the first hour, students are behind the camera and have a chance to practise directing. And we always encourage students to ask questions or voice their opinions.

About Workshop Leaders

The workshop is run by experienced workshop leaders, Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford. Toni and Alex are also both industry film professionals who have made award-winning internationally distributed short films, documentaries and a  feature film released by a Hollywood Studio.
