Workshop Outline

This practical workshop is a whistle-stop introduction to the world of micro-documentaries. It covers everything from coming up with a concept, researching, scripting, directing, the practical techniques for operating camera & sound for self-shooting plus the basics of editing documentaries, plus selling and distributing your film for a profit!.

The workshop is run by award-winning documentary film-makers  and industry professionals Toni Harman & Alex Wakeford both with nearly twenty years of film-making experience. Their last three self-made documentaries all had  tiny budgets and they have all made their money back MANY MANY TIMES OVER. And you can do the same. The workshop leaders previous three niche documentary films are DOULA!, FREEDOM FOR BIRTH and MICROBIRTH (winner of the top prize, the GRAND PRIX AWARD at the Life Sciences film Festival in Prague 2014).


Workshop Highlights

*By the end of the day, all participants will have received practical hands on intensive training on how to use  professional video camera (Sony HD camera) and sound equipment.

*All participants will be trained on how to direct documentary sequences and how to conduct interviews.

* All participants will be shown basic editing techniques including how to construct a compelling narrative.

* All areas of a micro-documentary covered including the key elements of producing a documentary that sells: coming up with a hot concept, scripting, budgeting, schedules, research, marketing, distribution, film festivals, social media, building an audience & selling your film!

* The workshop is run by highly experienced award-winning internationally distributed micro-documentary film-makers.

* Held in a central Brighton location using professional equipment (all equipment supplied).


* Places are limited to max 16 people allowing for everyone to have as much hands on experience as possible.

* No previous experience necessary – just a desire to make films!

10:00 Workshop begins. A crash-course introduction to the secrets of producing a micro-documentary: including concept, research, content, scripting, budgeting, schedules, marketing, building audience, film festival strategy, marketing, PR & social media.

11:20 Short break.

11.30 Practical Equipment Training – on camera & sound – everything you need to know about self-shooting a micro-documentary! Including how to operate a video camera, focus, exposure, white / colour balance and audio.

13.00 Lunch (not provided)

13.45 Practical Directing & Documentary Training – everything you need to know about shooting sequences & interviews. The essential shots you need to create a high-quality documentary. How to film master interviews, vox-pops, GVs (General views)  and documentary sequences. How to get the best from your interviewees. Tricks to get your interviewee to open up to reveal their inner thoughts.

15:30 Short break.

15:45 Editing & completing your film – the basics of editing including how to construct a documentary narrative. Completing, distributing and selling your film!
